WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster): The most recent report released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI)- the association of North American steel producers indicates that the US steel mill shipments increased by 3.4% in January 2014 over the previous month. However, the shipments in January this year were down by 3.8% when compared with the figures recorded during same month the previous year.
According to AISI, the US steel mills shipment for the month of January totaled 7,895,293 net tons, 3.4% higher when compared to the total shipments of 7,632,629 net tons during December last year. However, the steel shipments in January have decreased significantly over the year. The January 2014 steel shipments were down 3.8% when compared with the 8,210,726 net tons shipment during January 2013.
The products which witnessed sizable increase in shipments during the month of January when compared to the previous month were: hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip (up by 6%), hot rolled sheet (down by 3%) and cold rolled sheet (up by 2%). ScrapMonster
